Fortune Cat (招财猫)

Maneki-neko aka the fortune cat
is a common Japanese figurine (lucky charm, talisman), usually made of ceramic in modern times, which is often believed to bring good luck to the owner. The figurine depicts a cat (traditionally a calico Japanese bobtail) beckoning with an upright paw, and is usually displayed—often at the entrance—in shops, restaurants and other businesses. Some of the sculptures are electric or battery-powered and have a slow-moving paw beckoning. The maneki-neko is sometimes also called the welcoming cat, lucky cat, money cat, happy cat, or fortune cat in English.

The Gesture

To some Westerners it may seem as if the maneki-neko is waving rather than beckoning. This is due to the difference in gestures and body language recognized by some Westerners and the Japanese. The Japanese beckoning gesture is made by holding up the hand, palm out, and repeatedly folding the fingers down and back up, thus the cat's appearance. Some maneki-neko made specifically for some Western markets will have the cat's paw facing backwards, in a beckoning gesture familiar to more Westerners.
Maneki-neko can be found with either the right or left paw raised (and sometimes both). The significance of the right and left raised paw differs with time and place. A common belief is that the left paw raised brings in customers, while a right paw brings good luck and wealth, although some believe the opposite, or that one paw is for luck and the other for wealth. Another interpretation says that a raised left paw attracts money, while a raised right paw protects it. Still others say that a left paw raised is best for drinking establishments, the right paw for other stores (those who hold their liquor well are called "left-handed" (hidari-kiki) in Japanese). Yet another interpretation is that right is for home and left for business.
It is commonly believed the higher the raised paw, the greater the luck. Consequently, over the years maneki-neko's paw has tended to appear ever higher. Some use the paw height as a crude method of gauging the relative age of a figure. Another common belief is that the higher the paw, the greater the distance good fortune will come from.

I think its good to get one with both paws up.
I tried to look for this fortune cat with two paws up, but its seems that abit hard ah.

Colours
The most common color is white, followed by black and gold, and occasionally red is used as well. These are traditional for Maneki-neko. Some consider white to be for good luck generally, black for good health, and gold for monetary good fortune.

After doing some research, i finally bought 1 black colour fortune cat about 1 year back at Vivo City for less $200, i think its about $108, not very sure now. I at first dont really believe that this cat can bring me fortune. But because one of my family member is selling some japanese products in Singapore then they really follow the Japanese culture and some believes. Hence they brought one super big cat and put at their showroom.
big fortune cat
a closer look of the cat
from here it doesnt look really big right? but actually this cat cost up to 1K plus!

By the way, when i bought  from that vendors at Vivo , she would require us to draw the layout of the place where you wanna place the cat, for me i place inside my room. So we drew it out and let her see where we can place it. The cat got to face our bedroom door. And also after we bought it home we cannot straight away open it and starts to place coins inside. The lady will advice us what time and when then we open it and place it at the place where she advise us and got to place a "happy" $1 coin inside.
sorry that i couldn't find 2 $1, so i had to use a $0.10 to explain to you.
the left side coin is a sad face and the right one is a happy face. Can you see the difference now?

So start to deposit happy faces coins to your piggy bank now!!

Qing Ming Festival 清明节

I think for my generation right now, hardly anyone will follow their parents to pay their respect to the ancestors. Ever since I got married 2 years ago, i think that this occasion is as important as chinese new year. This is another occasion where all family members gather together and pay respect to the ancestors.

This is the 2nd year i follow my hubby to Malaysia (Chaah) to prepare for this festival. We left Sg at 3pm on 29.03.14 (sat) and we are stuck in the customs for 2 hours plus. Normally the journey from sg to his kampong is just a 2 and half hours journey. But this time is 5 hours. So tiring and super hungry!

On sunday morning we woke up at 7am then prepare everything and go to the graves of his ancestors. Malayisa's Qing Ming Festival is really different from Singapore. We had to go to a "park" where lots of graves are gather there. And im quite surprise that they remember where and which is their ancestors graves.  After cleaning up the graves, and poking the joss sticks surrounding the graves, everyone starts to chit chat and wait for the ancestors to finish eating. Some families also light up the fireworks or the firecracker. Its so loud and noisy like chinese new year. Yup! They says its the dead people chinese new year. O.o

After cleaning up the tombs at Chaah, around 1pm we drove to Batu Pahat and did the same thing as in the morning. But this time its at a temple. As the ancestors, they did not buried, they cremate and put the ashes inside the urn and store it at the temple.

After everything, we drove to Kluang as my hubby sister needs to go back to her school hostel for school the next day.

The school is abit old

Anyway, I would like to encourage all youngsters to follow their parents to pay respect to their ancestors as its just a yearly affair and it only takes a few hours. Do it every year so that this tradition wont be lost.

Biggest Balloon Sculpture in sg

Went to Marina Square to see the biggest balloon sculpture !

Its quite amazing ah, balloons can be made to such a big sculpture and it doesnt affect the rest of the balloons when some of it has burst or had turn small. Therefore this showcase was display for only 3 days.

Had lunch at Putien. Order the set meal for 2 and the total bill is around $65. As we did not make any reservations, so we are only allow to dine for 1 hour. And i was like thinking , if your dishes are cook quickly and being served to me fast, then of cos i will finish it fast la. And also one of the waitress     "auntie" is totally not well trained.

At the menu for the set meal, they listed a few dishes and then it comes to the dessert. And the dessert they put dessert of the day, so i asked the auntie...
ME : Auntie, what's the dessert for the day?
Auntie : Erm. It depends on the kitchen.
ME : Auntie, i know it depends on the kitchen to see what they have prepare la, but can i know before hand what is the dessert of the day or not.
Auntie : Oh. Ok. I help you go kitchen check.

Wah lao. she like dont understand what i meant at first lo. pissed off. And they hire quite a lot of part timers , when ask them for things, they super blur! Gave me a cup of warm barley with spoon but without straw. How to drink ah ?!

got no idea what the heck is this appetizer lo

spicy fish as you can see as there's a lot of the chilli
their fruits "platter"

Tang Music Box

Went to this new place to sing k, recommended by my bro-in-law friends. This place is awesome but kind of expensive as its located at Clarke Quay area.

Enter here and take the lift to 2nd floor
 Our room
 the door or our room

small touch screen to select the songs
Hubby & me (Love my pink hair!)
 Men's toilet
 the ladies
 toilet decor
a picture of me inside the toilet =X
unique tower!!
they have this small mini mart just located at their "lobby" so we could jus go there and grab some snacks. of cos we got to pay extra for it !

We sang from 9pm to 3.30am. Actually they gave us till 6 am as we have already double spend for the min. spending of the room. Meaning : I choose the medium room for 6 pax and the min. spending is $180, we only can sing for 3 hours. BUT if we wan to extend our hours inside the room we need to double spend which means min. spending for the medium room becomes $360. Hence, we order chivas and some other tidbits, and so they allow us to sing till 6am.
The staff are quite friendly. But maybe one thing no good is that , for the small bites and finger food, although they have a lot of choices, but they order from downstairs or some where nearby restaurants. And they close pretty early. So around 12am, they do not take these orders anymore. =(
Imagine if we will to sing till 6am, we will be hungry to death lo!

Anyway its a pretty good (clean) place for bringing kids up to sing k as kids below 12 no need to pay their cover charge . And we have booked the next trip there already!! Hehe! To finish up the balance chivas. Lol !
